Signing of the Algiers Agreement
The Algiers agreement was an agreement between Iran and Iraq, permitting Iran greater access to the Shatt Al-Arab waterway. The agreement stipulated that the river would be divided by its Thalweg The word Thalweg comes from the German "Tal" + "weg." It is the deepest point in a river (which is normally in the middle).. Previously (under the 1937 agreement) Iraq had had almost full control of the river.
